Pylon Art & Culture, Point Centre for Contemporary Art & Sic. Contemporary Culture present Vasilis Matosian’s new series of paintings that takes the still life as its point of departure, from which clearly discernible, carefully observed domestic objects and soft layers emerge, at times as direct observations and at others as translucent veils. Within the Minerva Hotel, the works resonate with a sense of the ephemeral, unfolding as though suspended outside the usual flow of time. This gives rise to an inquiry into where what we see ends and what we remember begins, and, ultimately, what constitutes a sense of presence. As the artist states: “By returning to the same subject matter again and again, painting demonstrates that perception is never fixed; every act of looking is subtly new. Together, the works transform the hotel into a place where attention itself becomes the
subject, proposing repetition as a means of discovering difference and as a means of withholding and unfolding time.”
The title is quoted from the final couplet of William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 76.
